WOYWW Odds and Ends

Hi - before I move on, a few folks have asked about Rosie. Yes, she has been fast asleep in all the pics I've shown of her - well, comatose might be more accurate! These are a couple of her winter weather perches the past couple of days, and yes, she's again soundly asleep in both!

Don't worry, I did disinfect here once she'd moved on!

And the latest precarious bed is in Mum's shower room. At least not too far to fall. It's pointless waking her unless it's really dangerous, as she just goes back!

All the knitting of the past few weeks is now finished

Six brooches passed on to the British Legion, for sale on Remembrance Day
And the socks for DD1 - they look a strange shape from this angle, but are fine really!

And now somewhere you rarely see, as I haven't been able to spend much time here at all, for ever. I occasionally snatch 15 minutes, but that's it, as I feel bad not spending time with Mum, downstairs. It's like a war zone because I've been searching for the right materials for three smash books. My girls will be spending New Year in Barcelona, with their Dad and Step Mum, for his birthday, and I thought I'd make the girls and Cindy a travel smash book each, to put together while they're away, and they'll have a gel pen, washi tape and glue stick each, that they can swap.

The front cover of the first book - just need letters to add a title.

The very bare and incomplete inside
This is all a steep learning curve, as I've never tried one of these before. I'll post again when it/they are finished.

The other art work I'm trying for the first time is Bible Art Journalling, and this was my first attempt, this week.

This was quite scary, as I don't have very steady handwriting, and the blank page was very daunting! I'm hoping to learn to relax and enjoy it. This verse has been popping into my head for the past couple of weeks, and has always been a favourite. It has just struck me that the promise is for a straight path, not necessarily a flat one - something most of us can attest to. Mine often feels more like a roller coaster!!

Sitting with Mum, I've got stuck back in to putting hexies together, for DD1's Christmas pressie bed quilt. It's growing, but slowly.

At the moment, I'm still putting white borders around the colours, and will show you when they're put together.

In  the meantime, I hope to visit as many desks as I can before the weekend. Thanks to everyone who pops over here, especially for all the lovely comments and encouragement. WOYWW?? Clicking the button on my side bar will transport you over to the lovely Julia, who coordinates a weekly visit to wonderful crafting desks all over the globe.

Have a happy WOYWW, lovelies, and a great week.  Hugs xx

  1. I read a whole heap about your crafting but seriously I didn't take it in as I was constantly going back and forth from the dish rack to the shower chair, your puddy tat is so precious, love his photos this week. Thanks for putting that smile on my face.

  4. Lol, love your cats novel sleeping positions!! How can she possibly be comfy like that? Ah well, there's no reasoning with them, is there?
Thank you so much for the amazing knitted poppy pattern. It's so easy and yet makes such a pretty result. I love the fluted edges that are created by the K3 together. I've really enjoyed making them :-)

  6. Chris, I love your laid back pussy cat, he is gorgeous.
After looking at the cat, I scrollled down to the socks, and viewing it on my phone it looked like another animal, I couldn't make it out at all. So then I read the text and all became clear.
That bible verse is fabulous, and so well written, well done.

  8. Wow, you have a lot going on! Thanks for the photos of Rosie. Yes, cats sleep in the most unusual poses.
I love those poppies. Shoshi (also on WOYWW) has made them too.
What a great idea to make travel smash books for the girls. I'm sure they'll love it.
How brave of you to start illustrating your Bible. I'd love to do that too but I haven't got such a Bible (and I can't afford the postage to be honest). I follow a lady called shanna (shannanoel@blogspot.com.es). She ask different people to show us their Bible pages. Very good. Have a look.
Thank you for letting me have a peep of your workspace,
    Have a good week

    1. Just been to visit Shanna Noel, Lisca (actually it's "dot" not"@" - I got a warning message when I tried that!!) - what a wonderful blog. The trouble is, I can't jounal on my Bible because every margin is already full of tiny hand-written notes!! I would need a separate book for it. Thanks for your mention of my felt poppies.

  10. I love cats, and yours is a treasure! How adorable. :) The dish drainer pic is my fave. Do keep spending as much time with your Mom as you can. Those times are precious and important. Your socks and poppies look great and the quilt --- another art that is out of my realm and I so admire those who can create them. It's awesome. Your handwriting is beautiful so don't worry about that. Thanks for having me visit and happy WOYWW.

  14. Rosie is quite astonishing really, it's amazing she gets any real rest, think of the headache you or I would have if we slept like that! I wonder if you've got a narcoleptic cat! Love the knitting of course, the poppy brooches are beautiful and the cover of your smash book is so pretty, glad you got some paper crafting time in. Have a great week.

  23. Hi Chris, cats are so funny! I love the poppy brooches, I bought one of Samaflora's and I hope I don't break it.
Yes I am having hardware problems right now, and I didn't even rant about the problems I have with the crochet pattern for my cardigan, which now looks like I will have to unpick the back and start again, and I can't work out the sleeve instructions - I will rant about that when I feel up to it!

I did an altered dictionary last year and loved doing it, I guess the bible is similar except you aren't obliterating any of the text! It looks beautiful.

  28. Love Rosie the cat - she is beautiful (if a little drowsy!).
I'm with you on the lack-of-time-because-of-mum problem. I have the same, only my mum is at her own house. I spend much of four days a week at her house, helping her with meals and jobs, plus other time on the remaining three days, if needed... (someone else helps with her meals on those days, but she can't do other stuff, like take her to appointments etc).
I manage some studio time though, when I get on and make the books you saw at my blog. I love the look of that "smash book" for your daughters. I like making books with folding pages etc - recently I made an experimental travel journal, which had a concertina for a base, but sets of pages stitched into each fold of the concertina - it worked very well. A friend actually bought it, as a gift for her own daughter, who was going travelling!
Nice to discover your blog, Chris - thank you for visiting me and leaving a lovely comment!

  29. Hi Chrysalis, I had to look, and then look again, at the first pic of Rosie! That can't possibly be comfortable and yet she looks perfectly happy. And then the one on the chair! My Bonnie sleeps in some odd places all over the house but nowhere as strange as Rosie's beds. However, she does have one thing in common with Rosie, she could sleep for Scotland :) She's a very old lady (15 years) so sleeping and eating with the minimum of exercise makes up her days ... I don't know how she stays so thin. Look forward to seeing the completed travel book you are making for your daughter. I like making folded books too ... when I have the time. My daughter is hand-stitching a hexagon quilt too ... it's taking her a long time but I will put a photo on my blog when completed. Have a great week. Elizabeth x #68

  33. What a lovely post, Chris. Rosie is an absolute hoot. I can hardly believe the funny places she chooses to sleep, and looks as if she's about to fall off any minute! A cat we used to have, called Chloe, used to sit in funny places too but not always to sleep - washing up bowl, bean sprouter, even in the fridge one day while I was cleaning it out! I love the socks, the poppies and the beautiful book - I shall be interested to see how that works as it looks quite complicated. As for the Bible artwork, it is fabulous. Your writing is beautiful and you need have no worries there - it is far more precious to be hand-done with the inevitable imperfections - otherwise you might just have well done it on the computer. Do you visit the sisters in the Philippines who are regular WOYWW-ers - Patsy and Peggy? They both do absolutely beautiful Bible art. This is not something I've ever attempted and it would be lovely to try (another project goes on Shoshi's back burner lol!!).

That could have been me writing - the feeling guilty bit, not spending enough time with Mum!! Mine is very difficult and she knows all the buttons to press to get me consumed with guilt. My wonderful hubby acts as a buffer, bless him, and does his best to take the strain off me, but it's me she wants (I should feel flattered... not!!) and I always seem to be on a knife edge emotionally over her. She has half the downstairs in this house. I say a prayer every time I go in there!!!

Thank you for your lovely visit, and you will be pleased to hear that Beatrice has picked up wonderfully since starting the new antibiotics, and is eating well. I just wish we could get to the bottom of these infections once and for all because they must be very debilitating for her, poor little thing. As for me, I get my days when I can't leave the recliner but in between I manage quite a bit! So glad you like my recent projects. Our local council puts on adult education courses which take place in several schools and colleges locally - most are for a term (10 wks, like my hubby's watercolour course) but some are half length. Tonight was the last felt one, and I've managed to secure the final available place on the soap course, which starts after a fortnight's break.

  35. What a fun kitty! Great project you are working on for your daughters. I am sure they will love their smash books. Bible art journaling?? It is first time I have heard that one. I would be nervous too, doing art right in the Bible. Am I understanding that right? Also, the quilt is lovely so far. I used to love to quilt. Don't know if I could still do it or not. 42. HI Chris, thanks for visiting my desk this week... I LOVE the idea of making smashbooks for the girls to fill, but it sounds/looks like a lot of work... they will sure appreciate that and I hope they fill it with beautiful words and memories! Journaling in a Bible takes a bit of courage to write on those pages maybe, but I'm sure you'll find it inspiring and rewarding. Happy woyww and a hug from (rainy and windy) Holland, Marit #59

  43. Awww bless your cat - it always amazes me the places they find to sleep. Our childhood cat use to love the ironing basket or even better if he could get into the airing cupboard - if ever we 'lost' him we would always check there first and he would usually be snuggled up under a big pile of towels LOL!!

The travel journals look great and I am sure they will be much appreciated. I am sure your poppy brooches will sell - what a fab way to raise money for such a worthwhile charity x
